Uruguay Duck Hunting
Duck Hunting in Uruguay

Many of our clients that end up booking a Uruguay duck hunting trip with us had actually first contacted us about an Argentina duck hunting trip—but ended up deciding that duck hunting in Uruguay was what they wanted to do.  Take a look at this photo, and you can easily understand why:

Uruguay Dove Hunting

Argentina duck hunting is phenomenal, but one should also look at the waterfowl hunting opportunities that exist in Uruguay—as well as Uruguay dove hunting.  Uruguay offers great dove hunting too and it is easier to do a combo trip in Uruguay, since all of the shooting is within a few hours of any given lodge.

How Do We Hunt The Ducks in Uruguay?

Unlike Argentina, one need not drive an hour every morning to get to the duck marsh (unless you booked with one of our competitors that uses a hotel to accommodate their guests).  The duck hunting in Uruguay with Los Gauchos takes place within minutes of the lodge, and hunters will find that what they save in travel time will really add up—or should we say subtract from—the fatigue that will build up after an all-night flight down to Uruguay, followed by a week of getting up at 4:00AM and driving for an hour.

We serve breakfast at 5:30, and have you in the blind by 6:00AM, just in time for the action (this time can fluctuate 20 minutes or so depending on the time of the year of course).  Once you are in the blind, a huge variety of ducks will bomb the decoy spread—in early season, you will see a lot of teal, and in late season the Pintails, Shovelers, and Rosybills will be in the mix.   Your guide will work the Retriever, and keep you supplied with shotgun shells and soft drinks while you are busy gunning the “patos”.

Can I Do a Duck / Dove Combination Trip?

You certainly can! Many of our guests elect to do three days of duck shooting, followed by a few days of high volume Uruguay dove hunting.  Some of our clients even cross the border for Argentina duck hunting and/or dove hunting as well.  There are so many possibilities in Uruguay that it will not be easy to choose, but once you do, it will be a lot easier to get from Point A to Point B than it ever would be in Argentina—where one needs to fly from province to province in search of the mixed bag that is only a couple of hours away in car in Uruguay.

What Other Combinations Are Available?

In addition to hunting ducks and doves, you can add decoyed pigeon shooting and Perdiz hunting to your mixed bag when you book with Los Gauchos.  The decoyed pigeon hunting is a real treat, and it is the closest thing to duck hunting in Uruguay, but without the early wake up calls and waders.

The Perdiz hunting is a great addition to any Uruguay duck hunting trip, and it is a “sure thing”.  Any wingshooter of a respectable level of skill will easily reach a limit in just an hour or two.  The dog work is fantastic, and this upland bird hunt is unique in every way.  The Perdiz is not a covey bird, so it will take some getting used to when they flush out of places that you never thought they could hide, and into the air—sometimes high, and sometimes low.

Perdiz hunting and Uruguay dove hunting go together well since they are both located in the same area—only a few minutes away from the estancia that you will be staying in.  To top it off, Golden Dorado fishing is also available with the above species, and present a unique choice for anglers and hunters who want to hunt and fish for species of birds and fish that are native only to South America.

Argentina Duck Hunting or Uruguay?  How Do I Make Up My Mind?

It is a tough decision.  Both countries are incredible in their own way, and should both make the short list of any serious international wingshooter.  Probably the biggest consideration is whether or not you desire a straight duck hunt—or a combination.  Combination hunters should go duck hunting in Uruguay and combine it with doves, pigeons, Perdiz and/or dorado, and those who desire duck AND geese should lean toward Argentina.

One of the best ways to decide is to see it all here on Los Gauchos TV!  Check it out and let us know if you have any more questions about the unbelievable hunting and fishing opportunities that are available to you through Los Gauchos Outfitters in Argentina and Uruguay.
